There is no specific information about the naming of Mohammadpur upazila. However, during the Mughal period, the zamindar of the region was Raja Sitaram Ray (born 1658 AD). He declared himself an independent king at one point and stopped paying revenue during the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. He named his capital Muhammadpur after the local Muslim Fakir Mahmud, replacing the old name of Baghjan.
Mohammadpur Upazila is located at 23.40 North Latitude and 89.60 East Longitude. Mohammadpur upazila is bordered by Madhukhali upazila of Faridpur district to the north and northwest, Boalmari and Alfadanga upazila of Faridpur district to the south, Lohagra upazila of Narail district to the south, Shalikha upazila of Magura district to the west and Magura Sadar upazila to the west and west.
